Paul Jones + Dave Kelly
January 20, 2016 @ 7:15 am - 11:00 pm£20
Wednesday 20 January 2016 – Edinburgh Blues Club present Paul Jones & Dave Kelly + John Alexander
Founder members of The Blues Band, Paul Jones and Dave Kelly’s tangled and colourful roots go way back into the true undergrowth of the tradition. As well as their own original material, they not only perform the music of Howlin’ Wolf, John Lee Hooker and Sonny Boy Williamson – they actually played alongside them, and enjoyed their friendship.
After more than twenty five years presenting his own BBC Radio 2 R&B show, and as a thrilling singer and harmonica maestro, what Paul Jones doesn’t know about the Blues can be written on a pinhead.
The same can be said about Europe’s leading bluesman, Dave Kelly. He’s played with them all, including legends such as James Burton, Buddy Guy and Son House. Superb Blues vocals combined with guitar virtuosity have elevated Dave Kelly into the higher echelon of international Blues performers, where he truly belongs.
A live acoustic set by this dynamic duo is an occasion you’ll remember.
If you’re a true Blues fan, everything you need is here.
Support By John Alexander “Dustbowl Blues with a Glasgow Kick”
John Alexander started out as a classical guitarist before his love of blues and country music got the better of him. Alexander’s musical journey has seen him disappearing for several years from the Northern Hemisphere to the sunnier climate of New Zealand. Basing himself in Christchurch in the South Island John followed various musical pursuits in the local music scene. These circles lead to John gaining vast live experience where he performed at what seemed like every bar, barn and outhouse in The South Island. After recording his debut Album ‘Waiting for Now’ with local artists, John upped roots and returned to his hometown of Glasgow.
Life in his native country as well as experiences of living in New Zealand and travel throughout the USA form much of the inspiration behind his songs. Influences ranging from the likes of Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, John Martyn, to Kelly Joe Phelps, Greg Brown and The John Butler Trio, are evident in the soulful lyrics and strong guitar riffs in his songs.
Alexander’s performing schedule has seen him open for Newton Faulkner, Karine Polwart, Martin Simpson & Johnny Dickinson and several US based songwriters including Grammy nominee Darrell Scott as well as appearances at Celtic Connections.
This show available to members of the Edinburgh Blues Club paying regular subscription with no additional ticket charge.
